02 · Note 05 — Three-Register Intros

Status: Outline. Body fills in Week 1. Voice: principal-level, BFSI-threaded, Apic-calibrated.

What this file is. The same career-arc thesis spoken at four time-budgets — 30 sec, 90 sec, 2 min, 5 min — and what's in / what's out at each length. The doctrine that powers the Two-Minute Intro Drill.

What this file is NOT. Four different scripts. Not memorized passages. The same arc, compressed or expanded.

Why four registers, not one

You will be asked your story at every loop stage, but the time you have is different each time:

  • Recruiter screen, opening: 30 sec to 2 min.
  • HM screen, opening: 90 sec to 2 min.
  • Onsite values round, opening: 2 min.
  • Onsite project deep-dive, opening: 5 min, with prompts.

If you walk in with only one script, you'll either rush the recruiter version or fill the onsite version with résumé filler. Walk in with four registers and the time-budget becomes a tool, not a constraint.

What's in / what's out at each length

30-sec register — pure thesis

  • Beat 1 — what kind of architect you are (1 phrase)
  • Beat 2 — what you want next (1 phrase, with the IC choice absorbed)
  • Beat 3 — why this seat closes the thesis (1 phrase)
  • Out: anchors, customer thesis, Apic artifact references.

90-sec register — thesis + one anchor + one Apic reference

  • Beats 1–3 as above, expanded by 1 sentence each.
  • One operational anchor (HIPAA or SHAP or governance-first delivery — pick one).
  • One Apic artifact reference (Constitutional AI or RSP or interpretability — pick one) with one-line summary.
  • Out: stack details, second anchor, BFSI customer-thesis line.

2-min register — adds the customer thesis

  • Everything in 90-sec.
  • Adds the BFSI / Indian-APAC customer thesis as a closing beat.
  • Adds 1 sentence on why Claude is the right tool for those customers.
  • Out: project deep dives, multiple anchors.

5-min register — invites a project deep dive

  • Everything in 2-min.
  • Names the most relevant past project (the Agentic Hybrid GraphRAG; full deep-dive lives in Module 01 Drill 03).
  • 30-second project arc inside the 5-min answer: customer → constraint → choice → trade-off → outcome.
  • Closes with: "Happy to go deeper on any of those — pick a thread."

The compression / expansion rules

Rule 1 — Beat order is invariant

Beats stay in the same order at all four lengths: kind of architect → what's next → why this seat. The IC choice always lives in beat 2.

Rule 2 — Expand by adding evidence, not adjectives

The 90-sec version is longer because it carries one anchor + one Apic reference, not because the adjectives are more elaborate.

Rule 3 — The customer thesis is the 2-min upgrade

If you're in a 90-sec slot, the BFSI / regulated-customer thesis is implicit. If you have 2 min, surface it.

Rule 4 — The project is the 5-min upgrade

Don't bring up your most relevant project before 2:30 of speaking time. Below that, it competes with the thesis.

Rule 5 — Always end with a hand-off

  • 30-sec: end on the seat.
  • 90-sec: end on the seat + one phrase that invites a follow-up.
  • 2-min: end on the customer thesis (which is itself an invitation to ask "tell me about a customer").
  • 5-min: end on "pick a thread" — explicit hand-off.

The cold-open variant

If the question is asked as "tell me about yourself" — neutral, no time-budget — default to 90 sec. It's the safest length: long enough to carry one anchor, short enough that the listener won't drift.

If the question is "walk me through your background" — slightly more inviting — default to 2 min.

If the question is "give me a 5-minute version" — default to 5 min, but trim to 4:30 to leave room.

Anti-patterns at each length

30-sec anti-pattern — résumé compression

"I worked at A for 3 years, then B for 2, now I'm interviewing." Time-budget compressed but it's still a résumé read. Fail.

90-sec anti-pattern — adjective inflation

The arc but with three "passionate about" qualifiers. Fail.

2-min anti-pattern — premature project dive

Burning 60 sec on "and one project I worked on…" before establishing the arc. Fail.

5-min anti-pattern — second project dive

Mentioning a second project. The 5-min slot is one project deep, not two projects shallow. Fail.

The recovery moves

"I don't have a 30-sec answer prepared"

Recovery: "Let me give you the short version: depth-first AI architect for regulated enterprise, three years building FDE practices, and the seat I want next is the trusted technical advisor for Indian BFSI customers adopting Claude. That's the headline." That's 25 seconds. Recovered.

"I overran the time-budget"

Recovery: stop. "Let me close that — happy to go deeper anywhere." Don't apologize ("sorry that was long"); apologizing reads worse than the overrun.

"I lost the thread"

Recovery: re-anchor on beat 1. "To pull back — what kind of architect I've become is customer-embedded, regulated-workload, eval-driven." You're back in the arc.
